Recycle your rags

Most people know you can donate used clothing and other goods, but what about the pair of jeans torn beyond repair or the threadbare sweatshirt full of holes? There are two companies in the Twin Cities that recycle rags. Wipers Recycling makes them into what they call wiping rags, which they sell in 10- and 25-lb boxes, or granular absorbents. They have drop-off locations in Maplewood and St. Paul Park.

There's also USAgain (Use Again), a national company with a location in Roseville, which processes clothes and rags from almost 1,000 collection bins.

All rags must be clean and dry.

  1. The USAGAIN website doesn't say anything about accepting rags -- it says clothes must be in good condition and ready to be worn again. I'm looking for a place to drop off clothes that are ripped, torn, etc., ones that can't be resold. Any suggestions near NE Minneapolis or Roseville area?

    1. Hi, it's not something that organizations like UsAgain, ARC and the Salvation Army want advertised because they don't want to be inundated with unsellable items. But they DO accept, bale and sell rags for recycling. Just make sure your stuff is clean and write on the outside of the bag CLEAN RAGS FOR RECYCLING.

  3. Plastic bottles only count for small fraction of plastic items still filling our monuments to Capitalism...our community landfills with outdoor toys, totes, plastic furniture, clothes, etc.
